Have you ever wished that you were better at map reading? Perhaps we can help you. Not only do we offer half day Navigation Workshops designed as an informal introduction to the craft, but we can also offer courses under the NNAS scheme at either Bronze or Silver level. The courses are run over two days, give you plenty of practical experience at planning and following a route and are a great confidence booster for those wanting to go off and expore the countryside by themselves.

|
|
- Map symbols and scales.
- Recognising & using linear features.
- Measuring distances.
- Orienting the map & following a route.
- Applying Naismith's Rule.
- Basic use of the compass.

By the end of the session you will have an undestanding of the basic techniques needed to use a map to best advantage. Wear comfortable but hard wearing clothing and a pair of boots. Bring a waterproof - just in case!
The NNAS courses are also based around Aberfoyle. They follow the syllabus set out by the National Navigation Award Scheme which can be found on their website - click here for details. These are extremely practical courses which not only lead to a nationally recognised qualification, but more importantly, give you the confidence to go off and explore on your own - from the planning stage right through to sitting down with a well earned refreshment at the end of a satisfying day.
As with our walks, we do not run our navigation courses to a fixed programme, but rather arrange them to suit your needs. Please contact us for details.
